UIC's Ryan Zink Carries Flames to 4-0 Victory
Indianapolis -- Illinois-Chicago's
Ryan Zink outdueled Eric Shaffer
with a four-hit shutout as the
Flames defeated Youngstown State 4-0
in the winner's bracket final of the
Horizon League Championship.
With the loss, the Penguins will play an elimination game
against UW-Milwaukee Saturday at
noon EST. The Flames advance to the
championship to play the winner of
the YSU/UWM contest at 4 p.m. EST.
Zink, who improved to 3-0 with a save in his career against
the Penguins, allowed only four
singles and did not allow a runner
to get past first base in his eighth
win of the season.
Shaffer allowed all three runs on nine hits while striking
out two to drop to 4-8 on the
campaign.
Shaffer got off to a rocky start as he allowed two singles to
Mark Hallberg and Bart Babineaux
with two outs in the first, but the
junior lefty went on to retire the
next nine hitters before running
into trouble in the fourth. Ted
Rosinski singled with two outs in
the fourth and Shaffer issued
back-to-back walks to Bryan Nolte
and Larry Gempp to load the bases.
Mike Bruszer then singled to center
to bring in Rosinski and a sliding
Nolte to put the Flames up 2-0.
After allowing a single to Justin Banks in the top of the
fourth, Zink retired 11 straight
hitters until Charles Schultz
reached on an infield single with
one out in the eighth. But Zink got
Mike Turjanica to line out to center
and froze pinch-hitter Jason Coffey
on a 1-2 pitch to end the inning.
UIC added two insurance runs in the eighth as Babineaux
singled with the infield in to bring
in Bryan Russo to make the score
3-0. After a sacrifice bunt from
Rosinski, Hallberg scored on Bryan
Nolte's safety squeeze to put the
Flames up four.
The Penguins threatened in the ninth when Brent Parks drew a
leadoff walk, but Zink got Brandon
Caipen to ground out and Erich
Diedrich to ground into a double
play.
Saturday's game will be carried on WNIO.com beginning at
11:50 a.m. EST.
