UW-Milwaukee's Bats Too Much As Penguins' Season Ends
Indianapolis -- Every UW-Milwaukee
starter recorded a hit and scored
and all but one had an RBI as the
third-seeded Panthers upset
second-seeded Youngstown State 12-10
in the loser's bracket final of the
Horizon League Championship Saturday
afternoon at Victory Field.
The loss ends YSU's bid to defend its 2004 tournament title
while UWM will advance to play
Illinois-Chicago at 4 p.m. EST in
the finals. The Penguins finish the
season with a mark of 29-27.
Charles Schultz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Mike
Turjanica had two hits and three
RBIs for the Penguins. Mike Goetz
led UWM's 18-hit attack with a
four-hit performance while Jesse
Hart and Joe Nowicki added three
hits apiece.
YSU led 5-0 in the game through four innings, but a seven-run
fifth inning gave the Panthers the
lead that they would never lose. UWM
scored all of its runs in a
four-inning span and held off a
frantic Penguins' comeback in the
ninth.
The Penguins took a 5-0 lead in the third as they banged out
five hits off UWM starter Mike
Rauwerdink. J.D. Hannan singled to
start the inning and Erich Diedrich
drew a one-out walk to put runners
on first and second. After a failed
pickoff that allowed Hannan to go to
third, Justin Banks hit a 0-2
offering to deep left center to
bring in both runners. Rauwerdink
got Jim Phillips to go down on
strikes for the second out, but
Dustin Thomas hit a double to the
wall in right center to bring in
Banks. Schultz then doubled off the
wall in left to bring in Thomas and
Mike Turjanica singled to right to
score Schultz to put the Penguins up
5-0.
UWM, however, answered with a seven-spot in the fifth to go
up 7-5. Goetz reached on an infield
single to start the inning and,
after back-to-back walks, Joe
Nowicki hit a two-run double to left
to bring in Goetz and Brooks Graff.
After Nicholas Wichser's RBI
groundout, Charlie Reschke hit an
RBI double and Jesse Hart drove an
RBI triple to left center to tie the
score. Two batters later, Ross McCoy
tripled to right center to bring in
Hart and knock Svitak out of the
game, and Goetz followed with an RBI
double to make the score 7-5.
Wicsher hit a two-run homer off Josh Wells in the sixth to
put the Panthers up 9-5, but YSU
answered with two runs in the bottom
half of the inning when Schultz
singled and Turjanica hit his first
career home run. The Panthers added
two runs in the seventh and one more
in the eighth to go up 12-7.
The Penguins rallied and got the tying run at the plate in
the ninth after Diedrich hit a
three-run homer and Jim Phillips
walked with two outs, but UWM
reliever Rob Brockel came in and got
Thomas to pop out to earn the save.
