Svitak, Diedrich Pace Penguins to Doubleheader
Sweep of Wright State
Fairborn, Ohio --
Andy Svitak allowed only three hits
in six shutout innings in game one
while Erich Diedrich went 4-for-6
with four runs scored to lead
Youngstown State to a doubleheader
sweep of Wright State on Saturday
afternoon at Nischwitz Field.
With the sweep, YSU increased its lead in the Horizon League
standings by improving to 6-1 in the
league and 22-15 overall. Wright
State dropped to 7-4 in the
conference and 18-20 overall.
Svitak allowed a hit in the first, third and fifth innings
and walked only two before giving
way to Kevin Libeg with a runner on
in the seventh. Libeg needed only
three pitches to end it as John
Kopilchack hit into a fielder's
choice and Ross Vagedes lined into a
game-ending double play.
Wright State's Robert Barrett was also impressive as he
blanked YSU through four innings,
but the Penguins broke through for a
run in the fifth and scored three
unearned runs in the seventh.
In the fifth, Diedrich hit a one-out double, stole third and
scored on two-out single from Mike
Turjanica.
Justin Banks doubled and Jim Phillips walked to start the
seventh before WSU reliever Joe
Smith came in and committed a
throwing error on a Diedrich
grounder that allowed Banks to
score. Charles Schultz thin singled
home Phillips and Josh Page hit an
RBI groundout later in the inning to
bring home Diedrich to make the
score 4-0.
In game two, the Penguins built a 6-1 lead through six
innings before Wright State climbed
back to within two with three runs
in the seventh. Eric Shaffer went 6
2/3 innings and allowed only four
hits - one in the first and three in
the fourth - to pick up his fourth
win of the season.
J.D. Hannan got the Penguins on the board in the third when
he hit a leadoff double, advanced to
third on a Brandon Caipen sacrifice
bunt and scored on a Diedrich
sacrifice fly.
Phillips doubled to start the fourth and scored on a Schultz
single to put YSU up 2-0, but Wright
State cut the margin to one in the
bottom of the inning without
recording a hit.
Banks and Phillips had run-scoring hits and Schultz added a
sacrifice fly in the fifth to give
the Penguins a 5-1 cushion, and
Brent Parks had an RBI groundout in
the sixth to make the score 6-1.
Brian Vickers hit a two-run double and scored on a two-out
Dan Biedenharn single in the seventh
for the final tally.
The Penguins will go for the series sweep tomorrow at Noon. |
