Late Rally Lifts Akron Over YSU in Midweek Bout, 8-4
Struthers, Ohio -- Akron scored
seven runs in the final two innings
to overcome a three-run deficit in
an 8-4 victory over Youngstown State
on Wednesday afternoon at Cene Park.
The Zips had been threatening on the edge of a big inning
with two hits in the fifth, sixth
and seventh innings before finally
breaking through with three runs in
the eighth and four more in the
ninth.
The win gave the Zips (10-26) their 10th win of the season
and their third victory in the past
four games. YSU dropped to 17-24
with the loss.
The game started out well for YSU as pitchers Chris Dennis,
Andy Svitak and Josh Wells held the
Zips without a hit for the first
four innings, and Erich Diedrich's
three-run homer to right in the
fourth put the Penguins up 3-0.
Akron got on the board in the fifth off of Joe Antinone when
Kurt Davidson brought in Ryan Frazee
on a sacrifice fly to deep left with
the bases loaded. The Penguins
countered with an unearned run in
the fifth when Justin Banks reached
on an error and scored on a Josh
Page sacrifice fly to center. After
Charles Schultz's single moved Banks
to third in the fifth, Akron
relievers Pat Watt and Patrick Gliha
held the Penguins to one hit over
the final four innings.
In the eighth, Brian Kimutis cut the margin to one with a
two-run single to right, and Scott
Gunn singled past a diving Mike
Turjanica at first to plate Frazee
with the tying run. YSU committed
two more errors in the ninth,
Rashard Graves drew a bases-loaded
walk and Frazee hit a three-run
double to make the 8-4.
Frazee finished with a game-high three hits and three RBIs
from the ninth spot in the Akron
lineup. Brandon Caipen singled twice
for YSU.
Kevin Lilbeg suffered the loss for YSU, allowing seven runs
in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Gliha
earned the win after holding the
Penguins hitless and scoreless in 1
2/3 innings.
Diedrich's homer was his eighth of the season and first since
April 12.
The Penguins will open up a three-game series with Butler on
Saturday at 1 p.m. at Eastwood
Field.
