Caipen, Diedrich Earn First-Team All-Horizon League Honors
Dayton, Ohio -- Youngstown State
senior Brandon Caipen earned
First-Team All-Horizon League honors
for the second straight season and
sophomore Erich Diedrich made the
team for the first time, the League
announced at its annual awards
banquet Tuesday evening.
Caipen is the first YSU player to earn First-Team All-Horizon
League honors twice in a career, and
he is only the third player to be
named first-team all-conference
twice. Senior Justin Banks and
freshman John Koehnlein earned
second-team honors, and Koehnlein
was named to the All-Newcomer Team.
Caipen, a catcher and outfielder from Tallmadge, Ohio, earned
first-team honors as a utility
player. This season he has posted
career-best numbers in batting
average, home runs, RBIs and runs
scored, and he became the first
player in school history to be named
First-Team CoSIDA Academic
All-District. Caipen also ranks in
the top five in YSU history in
career hits, runs scored, RBIs, at
bats, games played, doubles, triples
and total bases.
Diedrich, a native of Bay Village, Ohio, made first-team as a
designated hitter after leading the
team in batting average, home runs
and RBIs. He ranked second in the
Horizon League in RBIs, sixth in
home runs and seventh in hitting.
Diedrich also set the school record
for RBIs in a season with 56.
Banks, a first baseman from Steubenville, Ohio, hit a
team-best .417 against Horizon
League opponents and has hit .385
since April 1. A first-team
selection last season as a third
baseman, this season Banks has set
YSU's career records for total
bases, doubles and games played.
Koehnlein, a freshman from Toronto, Ohio, has been a key
player down the stretch for YSU
having started 22 of the past 24
games. Since becoming an everyday
starter, he has hit .333 and scored
a team-best 22 runs.
