Strong Start to Game One Leads YSU to Split With Butler
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State banged out 15 hits and got eight strong innings from starter Lucas Engle in a 10-4 victory in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader against Butler at Eastwood Field.
Josh Page and Justin Banks had three hits apiece and hit solo homers as the Penguins had 15 hits in game one, but Brian Deter held YSU to one run in Butler's 5-1 victory in game two.
With the split the Penguins moved to 18-25 overall and 9-11 in Horizon League games, and Butler moved to 16-26 and 9-14.
YSU played some of its best ball all season through the first six innings of game one. The offense poured out eight runs on 13 hits, and Engle held the Bulldogs to one hit and one run in the fourth inning.
After Engle struck out the side in the top of the first, Page put the Penguins up when he hit a 2-0 pitch from Bryan Bokowy over the left field fence for his first career home run. The sophomore added an RBI single in YSU's two-run fourth, and Banks' solo blast to left started the Penguins' five-run fifth.
The Bulldogs scored a run in each of the third innings, and YSU added an unearned run in the eighth for the final.
Engle allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five in his eight innings to earn his fourth win of the season. Bokowy fell to 3-3 after being charged with eight runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
In game two, Butler jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the third and one in the fifth. In the third, Jeff Brown singled home Kyle McLaughlin on one of his three hits of the game, and Joe Dempsey hit a two-out, two-run homer to left off of starter Eric Shaffer. Dempsey then singled in Brown with one out in the fifth to put the Bulldogs up four.
YSU posted seven hits and had two runners on in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but Deter allowed only one run on Brent Parks' leadoff homer in the fifth.
The Bulldogs added an unearned run in the eighth for the final tally.
Shaffer allowed all five Butler runs on 11 hits in 7 1/3 innings to drop to 3-5 on the year. Deter allowed seven hits and struck out four in the complete game victory, which was his fourth of the year.
The Penguins and Bulldogs will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
