Penguins Battle Through Wild Third Inning to Take Series With Butler
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State
overcame a five-run Butler third by
scoring seven runs with two outs in
the bottom of the inning in a 10-6
victory on Sunday afternoon at
Eastwood Field.
With the win, the Penguins took the season series 4-2 and
improved to 19-25 overall and 10-11
in the Horizon League. Butler fell
to 16-27 and 9-15.
The Bulldogs seemed in control through 2 2/3 innings as they
scored five runs on four hits and
three errors in the third, and
starter Jon Dages retired eight of
the first nine hitters he faced. But
after Dages got a strikeout and a
foul out to start the third, YSU
turned the game with five doubles
and two singles that resulted in
seven runs.
In the third the teams combined to score 12 runs, 24 hitters
came to the plate and both teams
left the bases loaded.
Butler did all of its damage before recording an out in the
third and got help from three YSU
errors. Dustin Bucalo doubled to
start the inning and scored one
batter later when third baseman John
Koehnlein threw wildly to first on
Jeff Brown's bunt. Joe Dempsey's
two-run single made the score 3-0,
and, after Tony Barnes scored on the
third error, Kyle Cox hit a
sacrifice fly to put the Bulldogs up
five. Starter Brian Boone settled
down to work out of a bases-loaded
jam by retiring the next two
hitters, and held the Bulldogs to
one hit in the next three innings.
In YSU's half of the third, Josh Page and Koehnlein hit
back-to-back doubles to left to
start the rally. After a walk to
Brandon Caipen, Erich Diedrich
doubled to left center to score two
runs and cut the margin to two.
Justin Banks then singled in
Diedrich, and a two-run single from
Lou Gattozzi and an RBI double from
Charles Schultz made the score 7-5.
Butler scored a run without recording a hit in the seventh to
get within one. Stephen Gill was hit
by a pitch with one out and advanced
to third on a wild pitch and a
groundout. After a walk to Matt
Ferguson, Gill came in from third
when Ferguson worked his way into a
rundown between first and second.
YSU got three insurance runs in the eighth on Caipen's
two-run single with the bases loaded
and Banks' RBI single.
Ryan Sellman worked a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save
of the season.
Boone held on to earn his second win of the season, allowing
six runs - three of which were
earned - on seven hits in 6 1/3
innings. Dages fell to 2-5 with the
loss.
Banks finished with a game-high three for YSU, and five other
Penguins recorded two hits apiece.
The Penguins will play midweek games against Ohio and Kent
State before a key weekend series
with league-leading UIC. Tuesday's
game with Ohio will begin at 6 p.m.
at Eastwood Field.
