Boone Pitches Penguins to 5-1 Victory Over Cleveland State
Niles, Ohio -- Senior Brian Boone allowed one run in seven innings and Youngstown State benefited from six Cleveland State errors en route to a 5-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
Boone, who also allowed one run in five innings against the Vikings a week ago, allowed seven hits and struck out five in his longest outing of the year.
The Penguins improved to 15-21 overall and 7-8 in the Horizon League with the win. The Vikings fell to 6-23 and 5-10 after entering the contest winning four of their last five games.
Cleveland State's pitching tandem of Josh Hungerman and Brian Long held the Penguins to five hits but were victimized by four unearned runs.
Josh Page and Brandon Caipen had two hits apiece at the top of the order for YSU, and J.D. Hannan added a double. Steve Chinn had three hits and Marc Sikora had two for the Vikings.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the third on three of their five hits in the game. Hannan hit a leadoff double and scored two batters later on Page's RBI single. After Page advanced to second on a failed pickoff, Caipen doubled to right center for his second hit of the game.
The Vikings scored a run off Boone in the fourth by posting three hits of their own. Chinn hit a one out single and scored one batter later when Michael Babin doubled down the right field line. Sikora hit what appeared to be a game-tying single two outs later in the inning, but right fielder Brent Parks gunned Babin at the plate to preserve the lead.
The Vikings threatened again in the seventh as Sikora singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Boone struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.
YSU then got two runs without recording a hit in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth for the final tally.
Since returning from a hand injury that he suffered at Wofford on March 5, Boone has allowed three runs in 12 innings of work. He also struck out 10 hitters in 11 innings against the Vikings.
The Penguins will return to action tomorrow with a 7 p.m. game against Malone at Cene Park.
