Strong Pitching, Clutch Hitting Gives YSU 3-2 Victory Over Kent State
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State's
eight pitchers combined to throw a
six-hitter and the Penguins scored
all of their runs with two outs in a
3-2 victory over Kent State on
Wednesday evening at Eastwood Field.
Sophomore Chuck Schiffhauer threw the first four innings and
held the Golden Flashes to two hits
and struck out two to earn his
fourth victory of the season. The
win gave the Penguins their 20th
victory of the season heading into a
three-game set against UIC this
weekend.
Justin Banks hit a two-run double in the first to put the
Penguins up 2-0 off of Kent State
starter Steven Davis. Josh Page and
John Koehlein hit back-to-back
singles to start the inning as YSU
recorded three of its eight hits in
the first.
Koehnlein then plated J.D. Hannan in the fifth on a two-out
single to right to put the Penguins
up 3-0.
Relievers Dominique Rodgers and Ryan Davis threw 3 1/3
innings of scoreless relief for the
Golden Flashes, and two KSU runs in
the sixth cut the margin to one. Joe
Tucker hit a leadoff single for Kent
State's only hit of the inning, but
an error, a wild pitch, two walks
and a hit batsmen allowed the Golden
Flashes to plate two before Lucas
Engle induced an inning-ending
double play with the bases loaded.
Eric Shaffer threw a scoreless seventh, and Kevin Libeg and
Ryan Sellman struck out the side in
the eighth and ninth innings to slam
the door. Sellman's save his fifth
of the season, which is one behind
his total from last season.
Kent State came into the game hitting .320 and had scored in
double digits 18 times.
The Penguins will open up their series with UIC on Friday at
7 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
