Former Pitcher Kevin Libeg Signs With The Cleveland Indians
Youngstown -- Former Youngstown State
reliever Kevin Libeg signed a free
agent contract with the Cleveland
Indians on Friday afternoon, making
him the second YSU player to sign a
professional contract this summer.
Libeg, a native of Hubbard, Ohio, will report to Winter
Haven, Fla., today and will play
with the GCL Indians in the Gulf
Coast League. He joins 28th-round
Major League Baseball draft
selection Brandon Caipen and 2005
fourth-round selection Justin Thomas
as the third member of the 2006
class to join the professional
ranks.
Libeg is also the 10th YSU player to be drafted or sign a
professional contract in the last
eight years.
"Kevin is a good kid and a great student, and he's very
deserving of this opportunity,"
assistant coach Kyle Sobecki said.
"He comes from a great family, and
we're very happy he's continuing his
career in the professional ranks."
Libeg finished his collegiate career as YSU's record holder
in career appearances with 82, and
his 26 appearances as a junior in
2005 rank as the second-most in
school history. He will be most
remembered for being the winning
pitcher in the championship game of
the 2004 Horizon League Tournament,
which gave the Penguins their first
ever conference championship and
sent them to the Division I NCAA
Tournament for the first time in
school history.
His best season came in 2005 when he picked up four wins in
relief and four saves after moving
to the bullpen in mid-March. In 22
relief appearances, he went 4-0 with
an ERA of 2.36, and he allowed only
three runs in 13 1/3 innings in
Horizon League contests.
This is the first season the Indians have fielded a team in
the Gulf Coast League. The GCL is a
13-team league that features a
54-game schedule that runs from late
June through the end of August.
