Dennis Headlines Strong Pitching in 5-2 Win Over Malone
Struthers, Ohio -- Youngstown State's
Chris Dennis struck out nine hitters
in five shutout innings to lift the
Penguins to a 5-2 victory over
Malone College on Wednesday evening
at Cene Park.
Dennis allowed three hits and did not walk a batter in his
69-pitch outing as he and four
relievers combined for a season-high
15 strikeouts.
The win extended the Penguins' winning streak to four games
and improved their record to 16-21.
Malone, which entered the game as
the No. 16 team in the NAIA, dropped
to 32-11.
YSU's Brandon Caipen continued his recent hot streak at the
plate with three singles and an RBI
in four at bats. The senior from
Tallmadge, Ohio, has now hit safely
in 10 of his last 13 at bats and has
seen his batting average raise 41
points over the past three games.
Josh Spencer singled twice for two
of Malone's five hits.
The Penguins got on the board in the first to take a 1-0 lead
and never trailed the rest of the
way. John Koehnlein hit a one-out
single to right and advanced to
second on a fielding error, and
Caipen followed with an RBI single
up the middle.
That run was all Dennis needed. After allowing a single to
Spencer in the first, the senior
lefty got Scott McIlvain to ground
into a double play and struck out
six of the next seven hitters he
faced.
Josh Page scored on Erich Diedrich's groundout in the third
to put YSU up 2-0, and the Penguins
added two more in the sixth on a
Brent Parks RBI groundout and an RBI
single from Dustin Thomas.
The Pioneers got two runs off reliever Chuck Schiffhauer in
the seventh on Bob Dubovec's double
off the top of the wall in left
center and a sacrifice fly from
Anthony Barson.
YSU answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the
seventh as J.D. Hannan scored on
Koehnlein's sacrifice fly. Kevin
Libeg battled through two errors and
a bloop single in the ninth by
striking out the side to earn his
second save. YSU reliever Andy
Svitak also struck out the side in
the sixth.
Adam Boudler allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings
to suffer his second loss of the
season for the Pioneers.
The Penguins will play a three-game series at Wright State
beginning Friday at 6 p.m. |
