Former Penguin Eric Shaffer to Continue Career in Frontier League
Youngstown -- Former Youngstown
State pitcher Eric Shaffer signed a
contract to play for the Evansville
Otters of the Frontier League on
Wednesday.
Shaffer, a 6-foot, 3-inch lefty from Akron, Ohio, is the
third Penguin to sign a professional
contract this off-season. He joins
the Houston Astros' 28th-round
selection Brandon Caipen and Kevin
Libeg, who signed a free agent
contract with the Cleveland Indians
two weeks ago.
Shaffer is also the 11th Youngstown State player to sign a
professional contract in head coach
Mike Florak's eight seasons.
Shaffer finished his career as one of the most veteran
pitchers in YSU history, ranking
second in school history in career
innings pitched and third in starts.
He compiled a career mark of 13-21
and was named to the Horizon League
All-Tournament Team in 2004.
He had his best statistical year as a senior, going 4-5 with
an ERA of 3.36 in 80 1/3 innings. He
set career-best numbers in ERA,
innings pitched and total
appearances, and he matched his
career-best marks in starts and
issued walks. He was one of the top
pitchers in the Horizon League over
the past two months of the season,
going 2-2 with an ERA of 2.17 in 54
innings after April 1.
Shaffer is the second YSU player to sign with Evansville in
the last three years. Former Penguin
first baseman and current assistant
coach Jim Lipinski played for the
Otters in 2004.
Since 1996, 39 Evansville players have signed with Major
League Baseball clubs.
