Local Standouts Vukovic and Morris
Highlight Spring Baseball Signees
Youngstown --
McDonald’s Corey Vukovic and
Canfield’s C.J. Morris will join
three other incoming freshmen and a
community college transfer on
Youngstown State’s 2007 baseball
squad, YSU head coach Mike Florak
announced.
The six-man group also includes Eric Marzec (Canton, Ohio),
Bryan Hamrick (Newark, Ohio), Aaron
Swenson (Twinsburg, Ohio) and Adam
Kalafos (Baltimore, Md.). They will
join five fall signees to bring the
recruiting class to 11 as the
Penguins will look to overcome the
loss of 10 seniors from the 2006
squad.
"We feel very happy about this recruiting class, and we think it’s
a good nucleus for the future and
the present of our program," Florak
said.
Vukovic, a right-handed pitcher, had a solid senior season at
McDonald High before leading the
Youngstown Class B League in innings
pitched (49.1) and strikeouts (71)
while pitching for Mink Financial.
Morris was among the B League's top
hitters and stole 10 bases as an
infielder for R&J Trucking.
Marzec was named the Division III Player of the Year by the
Ohio High School Baseball Coaches
Association and First-Team All-Ohio
after leading Canton Central
Catholic to the State semifinal game
against Ursuline. An outfielder and
a pitcher, he won his first 10
decisions of his senior year and
allowed just eight runs in his first
68 innings. Marzec also hit .371
with four home runs and 30 RBIs as a
senior.
Hamrick was named First-Team All-Ohio Capital Conference in
the Ohio Division as a senior in
leading Newark High to the OCC
division title. An outfielder and
leadoff hitter, Hamrick played for
the state champion Newark American
Legion Post 85 in the summer of
2005. He joins current YSU player
Dustin Wachter and fall recruit Ryan
Dunlap as the third player from
Newark to sign with the Penguins in
two years.
Swenson was Twinsburg's top pitcher and led the Tigers to the
State semifinal game against Lewis
Center Olentangy. He was the winning
pitcher in the regional semifinal
and threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings in
the regional championship.
Kalafos is a right-handed pitcher who has played the past two
seasons at The Community College of
Baltimore County Catonsville in
Maryland. He compiled an ERA of 2.48
in 54 appearances as a sophomore
over 10 appearances and struck out
34 hitters. |
