Flames Hold On To Take Series Opener Over YSU, 7-2
Niles, Ohio --
Illinois-Chicago got seven strong
innings from starter Zach Peterson
scored four late insurance runs in a
7-2 victory over Youngstown State on
Friday evening at Eastwood Field.
Peterson allowed two runs, both on solo homers, on eight hits
and struck out seven to earn his
sixth win of the season. The victory
lifts UIC's record to 27-15 overall
and 17-4 in the Horizon League while
YSU falls to 20-2 overall and 10-12
in league contests.
Lucas Engle allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out
eight before turning the game over
to the bullpen prior the Flames'
four-run eighth.
YSU got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth when
Dustin Thomas hit Peterson's first
pitch of the inning over the right
field fence for his third home run
of the season. Before Thomas' homer,
Peterson had not given up a
round-tripper in his 81 2/3 innings
this season.
UIC struck right back in the sixth with three runs on four
hits. Justin Johnson doubled in
Larry Gempp Jr. to tie the game and
scored one batter later on Ben
Trotter's single. After a fly out
and a walk, Nick Nolte put the
Flames up 3-1 with an RBI single to
center that scored Trotter.
Caipen followed Thomas' example in the fifth and knocked
Peterson's first pitch of the sixth
over the wall in left for his fifth
home run. The Penguins had runners
on first and third with nobody out
in the seventh, but Thomas was
nailed at the plate on a safety
squeeze and Peterson got a fly out
and strikeout to preserve the lead.
The Flames then erupted for four runs, three of which came on
Chad Schroeder's base-clearing
triple, in the eighth off the YSU
bullpen.
Engle and Peterson allowed only leadoff singles through the
first three innings, but Peterson
ran into trouble in the fourth. John
Koehnlein singled to start the
inning and, after Caipen reached and
a walk to Banks, the Penguins had
the bases loaded with one out. But
Peterson got Brent Parks to go down
on strikes and induced Lou Gattozzi
into a foul out to end the inning.
Engle was forced to work out of a jam in the fifth as the
Flames put runners on second and
third with nobody out. Ted Rosinski
singled and Chad Schroeder doubled
to start the inning before Koehnlein
snared a one-hopper at third with
the infield in to throw out Bryan
Nolte. Engle then got a strike
out and a fly out to end the inning.
Senior and four-year starter Justin Banks set the school
record for career games played with
209 this evening. Kendall Schlabach,
who played from 2001 to 2004, held
the previous record.
The Penguins and Flames will play a doubleheader tomorrow
beginning at 1 p.m. |
