Caipen's Record-Tying Five Hits Lead Penguins Past UWM, 12-8
Milwaukee, Wis. -- Youngstown State
senior Brandon Caipen had a career
day with five hits and six RBIs to
lead the Penguins to a 12-8 victory
over UW-Milwaukee on Sunday at Henry
Aaron Field.
Caipen became one of only seven players in school history to
record five hits in a game and is
the first since Kellen Dixon had
five against Western Illinois in
2001.
With the win, the Penguins took two of three games from the
Panthers and improved to 14-21
overall and 6-8 in the Horizon
League. UWM fell to 14-17 overall
and 6-8 in league games.
Caipen got going early with a single in the first, and his
two-run home run in the third got
the Penguins within one at 3-2. The
senior catcher then hit a three-run
double as part of a five-run fifth
that gave YSU a 7-3 advantage.
The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the fifth off
starter Chuck Schiffhauer, but the
sophomore righty held strong and
allowed only four runs on 13 hits in
6 2/3 innings to pick up the win.
After hitting into a fielder's choice in the sixth, Caipen
singled in the eighth as the
Penguins went up 8-4 when Brent
Parks scored on an error. The
Panthers plated three runs in the
eighth to get within one at 8-7, but
a three-run double from J.D. Hannan
and an RBI single from Caipen gave
the Penguins a 12-7 cushion.
UWM threatened in the ninth as it scored a run and had the
bases loaded with one out, but Ryan
Sellman came in to get the nation's
leading hitter Mike Goetz to foul
out and a fielder's choice to earn
the save.
The Penguins will play host to Cleveland State on Tuesday at
3 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
