Penguins Inch Up League Standings With Doubleheader Sweep
Struthers, Ohio -- Brent Parks hit
a game-winning single in the bottom
of the 12th to lift Youngstown State
to a 4-3 victory over UW-Milwaukee
in game one of a Saturday
doubleheader at Cene Park.
Parks' single capped a three-run rally for the Penguins, who
scored two runs in the bottom of the
ninth to send the game into extra
innings. YSU also claimed the
nightcap with 6-3 victory.
With the sweep, the Penguins moved into a tie for third place
with UW-Milwaukee in the Horizon
League standings with UW-Milwaukee
with a record of 14-12. Wright State
sits in second by one game with a
record of 15-11.
In game one, Ryan Sellman threw three innings of shutout
relief to improve to 5-0, and
starter Lucas Engle allowed two runs
on eight hits in seven innings.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Penguins got two
runs across on three hits to force
the game into extra innings. Charles
Schultz drove in Erich Diedrich on a
pinch-hit single up the middle with
one out, and UWM closer Jed Dolske
walked J.D. Hannan with the bases
loaded to tie it.
Brandon Caipen walked on four straight pitches to start the
12th and advanced on Diedrich's
sacrifice. After an intentional walk
to Justin Banks, Parks hit the first
pitch just inside the left field
line to score Caipen.
UW-Milwaukee starter Aaron Sorenson allowed two runs on five
hits and struck out six before
giving way to Tim Hoy with one out
and one on in the ninth. Dolske
suffered the loss, allowing one run
on five hits and three walks in
three innings.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the third when Mike Goetz
capped a three-hit inning with an
RBI single to left center. Dan
Buchholz led off the inning with a
single, and his pinch runner Jeremy
Wilson advanced to third on Matt
Curran's single. Goetz, who entered
the game as the NCAA's hitting
leader with an average of .514, then
posted one of his three hits to
plate Wilson.
Hannan tied the score in the bottom of the third with a solo
shot to left for his second home run
of the season, but Sorenson only
yielded only two more hits before
handing the game over in the ninth.
The Panthers reclaimed the lead in the seventh when Ross
McCoy hit a leadoff double and
scored one batter later on Zak
Rivera's single. Joe Nowicki then
singled in Goetz in the eighth to
put UWM up 3-1.
In game two, the Penguins started each of the first two
innings with three straight hits to
jump out to a 2-0 early in game two.
Caipen put YSU up 1-0 when he
singled in Josh Page in the first,
and Lou Gattozzi scored on a double
play with the bases loaded in the
second.
YSU upped its lead to five in the fourth on three unearned
runs when Erich Diedrich hit a
three-run double to left center with
two outs.
UW-Milwaukee climbed within two after scoring a run in the
sixth and John Hart's two-run single
in the seventh, but Chris Dennis
came in to hold the Panthers
scoreless over the final three
innings to earn his first save of
the season.
Justin Banks gave the Penguins an insurance run in the bottom
of the seventh with an RBI triple to
right.
Starter Brian Boone improved to 3-2 on the year, allowing all
three runs on eight hits in six
inning. Hannan finished with a
game-high three hits and scored a
run.
The Penguins will go for the series sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m.
at Cene Park. |
