Caipen, Schiffhauer Have Standout Performances in Loss to UWM
Struthers, Ohio -- Brandon Caipen
had a school-record-tying five hits
in a game for the second time this
season and starter Chuck Schiffhauer
went six strong innings, but the
Penguins bullpen surrendered eight
runs on seven hits and five walks in
the final three innings as the
Panthers came came from behind to
win 9-5 on Sunday at Cene Park.
Schiffhauer danced around trouble by allowing just one run on
eight hits in his six innings of
work. But in the seventh, two
untimely errors and some shaky
relief work allowed the Panthers to
score five runs to pull ahead 6-3.
YSU (24-27 overall and 14-13 in the Horizon League) clawed
back for run in the bottom of the
inning on a Justin Banks sacrifice
fly that scored John Koehnlein, but
could not take full advantage of a
bases-loaded one-out situation
failing to score off UWM reliever
Korey Keller.
In the eighth, Milwaukee added another run to pull ahead 7-4
before the team's waited out a
two-hour-and-five minute rain delay
during the inning.
After the delay, Chris Dennis struck out Tim Patzman with the
bases loaded to keep the Guins in
the contest.
In the eighth, YSU picked up a run when Caipen singled home
J.D. Hannan. With one out, the
Penguins threatened with runners on
first and second, but Erich Diedrich
hit into an inning-ending double
play. The Panthers tacked on two
runs in the ninth for the final
outcome.
The contest started off well for Guins when they tagged UWM
starter Matt Cavaiani (7-1) for two
runs in the first inning.
Schiffhauer allowed his only run of
the game in the fifth when Jesse
Hart doubled and scored on a Joe
Nowicki single.
YSU immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning
when Banks singled home Caipen
boosting the lead back to 3-1.
Joe Antinone (1-3) was credited with the loss after allowing
two consecutive singles during the
key seventh inning.
Caipen had five hits against UWM previously this year on
April 16. His two five-hit efforts
make him one of
only seven players in school history to record five
hits in a game. He had four singles
and a double on Sunday.
The loss also hurt in another way, as it dropped the Guins
one game behind UWM in to fourth
place in the league standings with
just one league series remaining.
YSU concluded the regular season with a three-game series at
Cleveland State. The Penguins and
Vikings play a doubleheader on
Friday beginning at 12:10 p.m. with
the finale set for Saturday
afternoon. |
