Engle, 10-Run Seventh Leads YSU to Doubleheader Split
Fairborn, Ohio -- Lucas Engle allowed four runs in his first career complete game and Youngstown State scored 10 runs in the seventh inning in a doubleheader split with Wright State on Saturday afternoon.
Only two of Engle's surrendered runs were earned, and the sophomore allowed 10 hits and struck out two in YSU's 11-4 win in game one. Wright State rebounded to take the nightcap 12-0 as starter Robert Barrett held the Penguins to three hits in eight innings.
YSU (17-22, 8-9 Horizon) trailed 4-0 in game one heading into the seven-run seventh in which it sent 14 men to the plate and scored nine of its runs with one out. The Penguins had only four hits in the inning as Wright State pitchers hit five YSU hitters and walked two others. Brandon Caipen and Erich Diedrich had RBI singles in the inning, and Charles Schultz delivered the big blow with a grand slam to right center.
The Penguins added a run in the eighth on a Lou Gattozzi homer to left.
Gattozzi, Caipen, Diedrich, Josh Page and Brent Parks finished with two hits apiece to lead the Penguins.
Wright State (20-16, 11-9 Horizon) led 4-0 after scoring two unearned runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth on a Justin Wilson two-run home run.
Engle improved to 3-3 with the win, and reliever Jason Bennion dropped to 1-1 after taking the loss for Wright State.
In game two, the Raiders scored seven runs off of YSU starter Chuck Schiffhauer in 3 1/3 innings to take a 7-0 lead in the fourth. They added two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Dan Biedenharn had four hits and scored twice for the Raiders while Justin Parker went 2-for-5 with five RBIs. Justin Banks singled and doubled for two of YSU's three hits in the game.
