Engle, 10-Run Seventh Leads YSU to Doubleheader Split
Fairborn, Ohio -- Lucas Engle allowed
four runs in his first career
complete game and Youngstown State
scored 10 runs in the seventh inning
in a doubleheader split with Wright
State on Saturday afternoon.
Only two of Engle's surrendered runs were earned, and the
sophomore allowed 10 hits and struck
out two in YSU's 11-4 win in game
one. Wright State rebounded to take
the nightcap 12-0 as starter Robert
Barrett held the Penguins to three
hits in eight innings.
YSU (17-22, 8-9 Horizon) trailed 4-0 in game one heading into
the seven-run seventh in which it
sent 14 men to the plate and scored
nine of its runs with one out. The
Penguins had only four hits in the
inning as Wright State pitchers hit
five YSU hitters and walked two
others. Brandon Caipen and Erich
Diedrich had RBI singles in the
inning, and Charles Schultz
delivered the big blow with a grand
slam to right center.
The Penguins added a run in the eighth on a Lou Gattozzi
homer to left.
Gattozzi, Caipen, Diedrich, Josh Page and Brent Parks
finished with two hits apiece to
lead the Penguins.
Wright State (20-16, 11-9 Horizon) led 4-0 after scoring two
unearned runs in the fifth and two
runs in the sixth on a Justin Wilson
two-run home run.
Engle improved to 3-3 with the win, and reliever Jason
Bennion dropped to 1-1 after taking
the loss for Wright State.
In game two, the Raiders scored seven runs off of YSU starter
Chuck Schiffhauer in 3 1/3 innings
to take a 7-0 lead in the fourth.
They added two runs in the sixth,
one in the seventh and two more in
the eighth.
Dan Biedenharn had four hits and scored twice for the Raiders
while Justin Parker went 2-for-5
with five RBIs. Justin Banks singled
and doubled for two of YSU's three
hits in the game.
The teams will play the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
