Penguins Fall to Wright State in Series Rubber
Game, 4-2
Fairborn, Ohio --
Wright State's Erich Schanz allowed
two runs in 6 2/3 innings and
Youngstown State stranded 11 runners
as the Raiders claimed the series
finale 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at
Nischwitz Stadium.
The victory allowed the Raiders to take two of three games
this weekend and split the overall
season series at 3-3. The loss drops
Youngstown State to 17-23 overall
and 8-10 in the Horizon League, and
Wright State improves to 21-16 and
12-9.
Schanz improved to 3-1 with the win, and Joe Smith earned his
league-leading ninth save after
holding YSU to one hit in 2 1/3
innings.
Brian Boone allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings
in a losing effort for the Penguins.
Wright State manufactured a run off of Boone in the first to
take an early 1-0 lead. Leadoff
hitter Ross Oeder singled to start
the inning and moved to second on a
Dan Biedenharn sacrifice. Aaron
Garcia then ripped a single to left
center to bring in Oeder.
YSU tied the score in the third when Brandon Caipen hit a
one-out single to right to bring in
J.D. Hannan from third. But Wright
State tagged Boone for two more runs
on a two-run double from Garcia in
the fifth and got a run off of Eric
Shaffer on a fielder's choice in the
sixth to go up 4-1.
YSU got a run back in the seventh when John Koehnlein scored
on Josh Page's groundout, but the
Penguins couldn't come up with the
big hit as they stranded two runners
in the seventh and left the bases
loaded in the eighth.
Caipen, Erich Diedrich and Justin Banks had two hits apiece
for the Penguins while Garcia had
three hits and three RBIs for the
Raiders. Wright State had eight hits
compared to nine for YSU, but the
Raiders stranded only five runners.
The Penguins will play host to Akron on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at
Cene Park.
