Diedrich's
Career Day Highlights Offensive
Outburst in Sweep

Diedrich had two
home runs and a
school-record
nine RBIs in
game one, and
John Koehnlein
had three hits
in game two to
lead the
Penguins to a
sweep of Butler
on Sunday
afternoon.
With the three-game sweep YSU is 3-0 in Horizon League play
for the second
time since
joining the
conference prior
to the 2002
season. The
Penguins have
also won six of
their last seven
games and seven
of their last
10.
After posting 17 hits yesterday against the Bulldogs, the
Penguins erupted
for 18 hits in
game one's 15-5
victory and 13
in their 7-3 win
in game two
today.
In game one, Diedrich went 4-for-6 with a grand slam in YSU's
five-run sixth
and a three-run
bomb in the
ninth. Koehlein
added four hits,
and Sean Lucas
and Lou Gattozzi
had three hits
apiece.
After leading 2-0 yesterday before the game was postponed due
to rain, the
Penguins scored
the first eight
runs today to go
up 10-0 after
the top of the
sixth.
Diedrich, Tom Clayton and Brent Parks had RBI hits in the
fifth to put YSU
up 5-0, and
Anthony Munoz
scored on an
error prior to
Diedrich's grand
slam in the
sixth.
Butler scored all of its runs and had 10 hits in the final
four innings but
did not get
closer than
eight.
Adam Kalafos allowed one run on eight hits in six innings to
earn his second
win in game one.
In game two YSU had five hits in a four-run second inning and
never trailed.
Butler got within one after a run in the second and two in
the fourth, but
YSU struck for
three in the
seventh for the
final tally.
Clayton and Mike Turjanica added two hits apiece and seven
different
players scored
for the Penguins
in game two.
Starter Aaron Swenson earned his first career victory,
allowing three
runs on five
hits in five
innings. Chuck
Schiffhauer
threw three
scoreless
innings of
relief, and Andy
Svitak pitched a
scoreless ninth.
The Penguins will play at Ohio on Tuesday before their home
opener against
Malone Wednesday
at 3 p.m. at
Cene Park. |
