Former Penguin Brandon Caipen
Promoted to Short-Season "A" Club
Youngstown --
Former Youngstown State utility
player Brandon Caipen has been
promoted to the Tri-City ValleyCats
of the Short-Season Class "A" New
York-Penn League.
Caipen, a 28th-round selection by the Houston Astros in the
June Major League Baseball
First-Year Player Draft, had
previously been playing for the
Greenville Astros of the Appalachian
League.
In 66 games with Greenville, Caipen ranked third on the team in hitting
with a .265 average and led the
squad in walks (37) and stolen bases
(15).
He singled, scored and walked twice in his second game with
the ValleyCats, who advanced to the
NYPL Championship Series with a
sweep of the Auburn Doubledays. The ValleyCats won the
Stedler division of the New
York-Penn League and finished two
games behind
Staten Island, who they will face in
the Championship starting Tuesday,
for the best record in the league.
Caipen is not the only former Penguin having success in the
minors. Justin Thomas, a
fourth-round selection by Seattle in
2005, currently has a record of 9-4
for the Inland Empire 66ers of the
Class "A" Advanced California
League. The former Horizon League
Pitcher of the Year has made 17
starts, thrown one shutout, and has
struck out an impressive 111 hitters
against 45 walks in 105 1/3 innings.
He had previously gone 5-5 with an
ERA of 3.10 for the Wisconsin Timber
Rattlers.
Cleveland Indians free agent signee Kevin Libeg finished his
first season in the Gulf Coast
League with an ERA of 3.86 in 12
appearances. Eric Shaffer finished
0-1 with an ERA of 4.46 in 12 games
for the Evansville Otters of the
Frontier League. |
