Thirteen Hits Not Enough in 12-7 Loss at Kent State

Kent, Ohio -- Kent State scored six straight runs early to outslug Youngstown State in a 12-7 victory on Wednesday in YSU's final game before opening Horizon League play this weekend.
The Golden Flashes turned a one-run deficit into a five-run lead thanks to two-run homers in the third and fourth innings and never looked back.
YSU's loss snapped a three-game winning streak while Kent State improved to 6-12.
Josh Page had two hits and two RBIs while John Koehnlein and Lou Gattozzi added two hits apiece to lead the Penguins. Andrew Davis had four hits and four RBIs to lead the Golden Flashes.
After Kent State got a run in the first, Page and Dustin Wachter had back-to-back RBI hits to put the Penguins up 2-1. The Golden Flashes regained the lead with four runs in the third on Andrew Davis' two-run single and Anthony Gallas' two-run home run. Davis then hit a two-run homer in the fourth to increase the KSU lead to 7-2.
YSU got within three at 9-6 after RBI singles from Erich Diedrich and Tom Clayton, but Kent State got three runs in the seventh to go up 12-6. Koehnlein doubled home Rayce Robinson in the eighth for the final tally.
Starter Eric Marzec allowed seven runs on eight hits in four innings to suffer his first loss of the season for YSU while Alan Morrison earned his first win for Kent State.
The Penguins will begin a three-game series at Butler on Friday at 3 p.m.
