Morehead State Outslugs YSU 13-9; Game Two Postponed Until Saturday
Morehead, Ky. -- Youngstown State allowed six
unearned runs and came up short with a late rally in a 13-9 loss to Morehead
State on Friday afternoon at Allen Field.
Morehead State scored five runs in the first inning and
plated four in the seventh after YSU worked its way to within one. Game two of
the scheduled doubleheader was postponed until Saturday.
John Koehnlein had three hits and scored three times while
Sean Lucas had three hits and three RBIs for the Penguins.
Trent Hanna hit a leadoff home run and Ryan Kinder hit a
three-run homer as the Eagles scored four runs before recording an out in the
first. Chris McCaslin followed with a single and came around to score on a
double play that put MSU up 5-0.
Lucas hit a two-run double in the third and Anthony Munoz
doubled in Eric Marzec an inning later to get the Penguins within two, but the
Eagles scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-3.
Another unearned run in the fifth put the Eagles ahead 9-3
before the Penguins scored five in the sixth to get within one. YSU loaded the
bases on Ryan Dunlap's leadoff single and back-to-back walks, and John Koehnlein
followed with a two-run single. Sean Lucas and Erich Diedrich then hit
back-to-back RBI singles, but Tyler Lee induced a double play with runners on
the corners to end the inning and keep the lead.
The Eagles then erupted for four runs on six hits and an
error in the seventh to to up 13-8, and Koehnlein's run on a wild pitch in the
eighth was as close as YSU would get.
Chuck Schiffhauer allowed five earned and three unearned runs
in 3 1/3 innings in a losing effort for YSU. Lee allowed six runs in five
innings of relief for Morehead State to pick up the win.
Kinder finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs while Drew Lee scored
four times for the Eagles.
YSU had a season-best 12 hits in the game, and its nine runs
were also a season high.
