Four Homers Pace Lumberjacks to 12-1 Victory Over Penguins
Nacogdoches, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin hit four
home runs and scored eight runs in the first three innings en route to a 12-1
victory over Youngstown State on Saturday at Jaycees Field.
Second baseman Noel Trevino went 3-for-5 with a grand slam
while Steven Hill had three hits and three RBIs for SFA, which improved to 5-8.
Josh Page, Erich Diedrich and John Koehnlein had two hits
apiece for YSU while Rob Sullivan and Bryan Hamrick each posted their first
career hits.
SFA starter Jared Schrom allowed one run on six hits in five
innings of work to pick up his first win. Chuck Schiffhauer allowed nine runs on
10 hits in five innings in a losing effort for YSU.
The Penguins had a chance to take a lead in the first for the
second straight day but failed to score. Koehnlein hit a leadoff single and
advanced to third when Page reached on an error but was eventually picked off at
third. Erich Diedrich singled Page to third with one out, but Schrom got Brent
Parks to fly out to end the inning.
The Lumberjacks took a 1-0 lead when Steven Hill singled home
Jeff Brewer and scored four more with two outs in the second on Noel Trevino's
grand slam. SFA added three in the third on a two-run Jeremy Arterburn homer and
an RBI groundout.
YSU got on the board in the fifth when Page singled home
Bryan Hamrick with two outs. Hamrick reached on a one-out single to left center
and stole second after a strikeout. Koehnlein reached on an infield single to
keep the inning alive to set up Page's single.
SFA got the run back immediately in the bottom of the inning
when Kevin Crabtree hit a leadoff home run to left center and added three more
in the sixth for the final tally.
The Penguins will look to avoid a sweep tomorrow at 2 p.m.
