Penguins Concluding Impressive Summer Seasons
Youngstown
-- A group of Youngstown State
baseball players are finishing up
their summer seasons with impressive
numbers and honors in three
top-level wooden bat leagues across
the country.
Erich Diedrich was named First-Team All-Great Lakes Summer
Collegiate League as a first baseman for the Columbus All-Americans. Batting
cleanup in the wooden-bat league, Diedrich hit .350 during the regular season
and ranked ranked second in the league total bases, third in home runs and
fourth in hits and runs scored. He then went 8-for-12 with four runs scored in
four postseason games to help lead the All-Americans to the Great Lakes League
title. Earlier in the year Diedrich was named to the all star team.
Relief pitcher Ryan Wackerman also earned second-team honors
and was an all star in the Great Lakes League as a member of the Southern Ohio
Copperheads. Wackerman finished the regular season with a record of 2-0 with one
save while compiling a 0.87 ERA in 17 appearances. He allowed 15 hits and two
earned runs in his 20 2/3 innings, and opposing batters hit .203 against him.
Wackerman struck out three hitters in 2 2/3 scoreless frames in the
quarterfinals of the playoffs in his only postseason appearance.
John Koehnlein and Dustin Wachter joined Wackerman on the
Copperheads team. Koehnlein hit .282 and scored 18 runs in 31 games while
Wachter hit .303 in 13 games during the regular season. Koehnlein then stormed
into the postseason by posting hits in his first seven at bats before going
0-for-4 against Diedrich's All-Americans in the semifinals.
Chuck Schiffhauer finished the year with a 2.67 ERA and
struck out 19 batters in 30 1/3 innings for the Stark County Terriers.
Josh Page and Adam Kalafos had solid seasons for the
Staunton Braves in the Valley Baseball League in Virginia. Page hit .277, scored
19 runs, stole 15 bases and turned 25 double plays to earn team MVP honors.
Kalafos went 5-1 with a 2.92 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 49.1 innings over nine
starts.
In the Texas Collegiate League, Lucas Engle and Ryan
Sellman are still pitching for the playoff-bound Coppell Copperheads. Engle is
entering postseason play with a 3-0 record and a 2.23 ERA in nine appearances.
He has made five starts and four appearances out of the bullpen, and opposing
batters are hitting .213 against him. Sellman is 1-0 with a save and a 3.68 ERA
in 14 appearances out of the bullpen.
