Corey Vukovic
Named Horizon League Pitcher of the
Week
Indianapolis -- Youngstown State
sophomore Corey Vukovic has been
recognized as the Horizon League
Pitcher of the Week, the league
announced Monday.
Vukovic, a native of McDonald, Ohio, did not allow a run in
9.1 innings last week and led YSU to
a 6-0 shutout against Valparaiso on
Saturday.
Vukovic, who made his first weekend start of the season
against the Crusaders, has a record
of 1-1 on the year and ranks fifth
in the Horizon League with a 3.42
ERA.
The right-hander's week was characterized by dominance and
the ability to work out of jams.
Against the Crusaders he threw seven scoreless innings, scattered six
hits,
did not issue a walk and struck out a career-high seven batters. He pitched
into the eighth inning and did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the
fourth inning.
Out of the bullpen against Duquesne, he worked out of three
jams in 2.1 innings to allow YSU to tie the score and eventually
win in 14 innings. None was bigger than the ninth inning when the Dukes put a runner on third with nobody out
and were turned away scoreless.
This is Vukovic's first career Pitcher of the Week award.
Fellow sophomore Aaron Swenson
earned the recognition two weeks
ago. |
