Youngstown -- With the Youngstown State baseball season just more than three weeks away, head coach Rich Pasquale announced the Penguins’ 2010 schedule on Tuesday.

The slate features five first-time opponents, including three hailing from Philadelphia, and a very home-heavy April. The Penguins open the campaign with 20 straight games on the road, play 21 of their next 23 at home and finish the regular season with 13 consecutive away contests. The Horizon League Tournament will be hosted by Valparaiso at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. from May 26 to May 30.

YSU opens the season on Feb. 26 with the first game of a three-game series at New Orleans, the alma mater of assistant coach Tom Lipari. After a three-game stint at Cincinnati starting on March 5, the Penguins will play Lipscomb for the first time in school history in a two-game series in Nashville, Tenn. on March 9-10.

On March 12-14, Youngstown State will serve as the host school in a three-game series with Walsh University at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. YSU will then play one game apiece at Pittsburgh, La Salle, Saint Joseph’s, Villanova and Kent State between March 16 and March 24.

The Penguins begin Horizon League play at Butler in a three-game series that begins on March 26, and they’ll play at Duquesne on March 30 for their 20th consecutive road contest to start the season.

YSU’s home opener is set for Wednesday, March 31, against Canisius at 3 p.m. in the only game of the season scheduled at Cene Park. The Guins’ first game at Eastwood Field will be against eight-time defending Horizon league champion UIC on April 2 at 3 p.m. YSU will also host league series against Valparaiso (April 9-10), Milwaukee (April 23), Butler (April 25) and Wright State (April 30-May 1) at Eastwood Field.

In between, the Guins will host non-conference games against Duquesne on April 7, Akron on April 14, Pittsburgh on April 21 and Kent State on April 27. YSU will also welcome Le Moyne for a three-game series on April 17-18. In the span of playing 21 out of 23 games at home, YSU will play at Niagara on April 13 and at Akron on April 28.
