    YSU Associate Athletic Trainer John Doneyko, ATC, continues to be one of the most dedicated members of the men’s basketball program and the athletic department.
    Doneyko is in his 22nd season taking care of the Penguin student-athletes. Besides his duties as athletic trainer, Doneyko has been responsible for coordinating the men’s basketball travel since 1989.
    He has worked with six YSU men’s basketball coaches in 19 seasons. During the 2004-05 season, “JD” as he is affectionately known, took part in his 500th YSU men’s basketball contest when the Penguins played at Missouri State on Dec. 3. Since the 1986-97 campaign, Doneyko has missed just eight games, only one because of illness.
    A licensed athletic trainer in Ohio and a nationally-certified Athletic Trainer, Doneyko has also worked closely with the YSU football team in his tenure and been part of the four championship teams.
    Prior to joining the YSU athletic department, Doneyko worked as an assistant trainer for the Cleveland Browns.
    Doneyko graduated from Kent State with a bachelor’s of science degree in 1985 and received his master’s degree in athletic training from Ohio in 1986.
    John and his wife, Kathleen, reside in Cortland with their two sons, Kyle and Alex. Kyle is freshman at Youngstown State.
    He and his family are active members in Children of Chernobyl, an organization which helps provide respite and relief to children who were affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear explosion of 1986.
