Football: Big Plays Costly in Loss at Western Michigan

    Kalamazoo, Mich. -- A
21-point second quarter gave the Youngstown State football team a 21-17 lead with just 26 seconds remaining in the second quarter, but Western Michigan scored on a 42-yard Hail Mary pass as time expired before the half to take the lead for good. The Division I-A Broncos went on to a 46-28 win at Waldo Stadium on Saturday.
The Broncos built up their lead to a 34-21 in the fourth quarter, but the Penguins failed to give up. YSU closed to within 34-28 on a two-yard scoring run by freshman Ime Akpan. However, on the ensuing kickoff, Rashad McDade foiled the Penguins’ comeback attempt with a 99-yard kickoff return with just 7:41 to play in the game.
The loss spoiled a remarkable performance from sophomore quarterback Jeff Ryan and senior wide receiver Elliott Giles. Ryan completed 24-of-37 passes for 253 yards and Giles caught a career-high nine passes for 144 yards.
The Penguins return to action next Saturday when they host Division II power Indian (Pa.).
