Football: Defense Earns Win in First Scrimmage, 50-39
Youngstown -- The Youngstown
State defense used six turnovers and
held off a late rally by the offense
to retain the Red Jerseys in the
first jersey scrimmage of the spring
on a rainy Friday afternoon at
Stambaugh Stadium.
On the defensive side, Herb Jones, Scott Thiessen and Jason
Perry recorded interceptions while
Mike Bracken, Joe Juby and Scott
Wahl each had fumble recoveries
during the 127-play session.
Highlighting the offensive effort
was Justin Reams who finished with a
scrimmage-high 86 yards, including a
five-yard touchdown run. Josiah Doby
scored on a one-yard run and Nick
Terracina kicked a 31-yard field
goal.
Coach Jon Heacock said the six turnovers were disappointing
and the offense needs to understand
that taking care of the ball is
critical.
"It was pretty live out there today," Heacock said. "There
were a lot of bodies flying around
and hustling. Our running backs ran
well, but we need to find a way to
get hats on people and block. On the
defensive side, everyone was into
it."
Sophomore quarterback Aaron Marshall suffered a sprained
right ankle and was knocked out of
the scrimmage on the 17th play. He
finished with 14 yards rushing and
was 2-of-7 passing for 23 yards and
one interception.
Senior Luis Gonzalez completed 11 of his first 15 passes
before finishing the scrimmage by
going 13-of-26 for 105 yards and had
one interception. Junior Matt
Rycraft was 6-of-8 for 53 yards and
had one interception.
Reams led the Penguins on the ground with 86 yards on 13
carries, including big runs of 30
and 38 yards. Darius Peteson had 72
yards on 14 carries, Josh Cayson had
50 yards on 15 carries, Doby had 34
yards on 10 rushes and senior Mike
Burns had 25 yards on eight carries.
Redshirt freshman Max King had a scrimmage-best four
receptions while Alex Bailey had a
best 37 yards on three catches.
Over the weekend,
the Penguins practice at 10:30 a.m.
on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Sunday will be YSU's lone Special
Teams Scrimmage of the Spring. |
