Football: Penguins Land Three on Gateway First Team
St. Louis, Mo. -- The Youngstown State football team was represented by three individuals on the All-Gateway Football Conference first team and had a total seven players named all-conference, the league announced on Tuesday.
Being selected to the first team were sophomore fullback Demetrius Ison (Jackson Center, Pa.), senior tight end Mike Roberts (Plant City, Fla.) and senior strong safety Mike Bracken (Imperial, Pa,). The lone Penguin to make the second team was sophomore linebacker Jeremiah Wright (Orlando, Fla.). Three YSU players were named honorable-mention All-Gateway with junior defensive end Brandon Brown (Youngstown), junior wide receiver Kyle Smith (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore cornerback Jason Perry (Warrensville Heights, Ohio) being picked.
Ison had one of the best all-around seasons by a fullback in school history. He caught 28 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns while rushing 37 times for 104 yards and three scores. His 28 receptions tied for the second most on the team and set a school record for single-season receptions by a fullback.
Roberts, who was a second-team All-Gateway pick in 2003, caught 24 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns. He had a career-long 73-yard reception in his final YSU game at SMS on Nov. 13.
Bracken, who was also a second-team All-Gateway selection in 2003, was third on the team with 74 total tackles. He was second on the team with two interceptions, three pass breakups, and 36 solo tackles.
Wright came on strong at the end of the year to become the first sophomore to lead the team in total tackles since Dwyte Smiley in 1997. Wright had 91 stops on the year to lead the team.
Brown led the Penguins in sacks (four), tackles for losses (8.5) and fumbles recovered (2). He was sixth on the team with 46 total tackles, including 23 solo stops.
Smith caught a pass in every game to finish the year with 28 receptions. He had a team-high 444 yards while averaging a team-best 15.9 per grab. He scored two touchdowns on the year and has caught a pass in his last 21 games played.
Perry led Youngstown State in interceptions with three and pass breakups with five. He was fifth on the team with 59 total tackles, including 32 solo stops.
