Football: Zetts, Scholes, Marshall Earn Southern Illinois Game Honors
Youngstown
–
Sophomore quarterback Tom Zetts,
senior defensive end Justin Scholes
and senior tight end Aaron Marshall
were named the YSU Hill Barth & King
Players of the Game for their
performances in the 31-17 loss at
fifth-ranked Southern Illinois, the
coaching staff announced on Tuesday.
Zetts had one of the top 15 performances by a quarterback in
school history to earn HBK Offensive
Player-of-the-Game accolades. He
completed 18-of-31 passes for a
career-high 291 yards and two
touchdowns. His yardage total ranks
as the 13th-best outing by a
quarterback in school history. It
was the fifth time this season in
which Zetts threw for more than 200
yards in a game. The school record
for 200-yard games in a season is
six held by Ron Jaworski in 1972.
Scholes had a career-high two sacks en route to being named
the HBK Defensive Player of the
Game. He was credited with five solo
tackles, including three for 19
yards in losses. He had two sacks
and forced two fumbles.
Marshall, who caught a 72-yard touchdown pass in the game,
was named the Hill Barth & King
Special Teams Player of the Game. On
the ensuing point-after try
following his score, Marshall made a
great placement on a wide snap as
placekicker Brian Palmer was able to
convert. Marshall was also on
kickoff return units.
Senior offensive guard Jamel Lee was named the Jim Zdelar
Offensive Lineman of the Game.
During the week, Lee was moved from
right tackle to right guard. Lee had
started the first nine games of the
season at right tackle before junior
Pat Walker started their on
Saturday. Four different players
have started at right guard this
season, including Lee's start
against the Salukis.
Junior linebacker Marty Hutchinson was named the Jermaine
Hopkins Defensive Lineman of the
Game of his performance. Hutchinson
was credited with 32 snaps played
and had five solo tackles along with
three assists according to the
coaching staff.
Earning scout team honors for their play and attitude
throughout the week were sophomore
tailback Brandon Nicholson
(offense), freshman defensive tackle
Jon Italiano (defense) and freshman
placekicker Halley Ferrell (special
teams).
Sophomore defensive end Jose Galloza was awarded the W.O.W./Derek
Pixley Hit of the Game. Zetts was
selected as the Haines Family Player
of the Game by the YSU radio
broadcast team.
In the
national polls, the Penguins dropped
to 19th in the Sports Network Top 25
Poll and fell to 21st in the
ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Western
Kentucky, YSU's opponent this
Saturday, is now 12th in the Sports
Network poll and 14th in the
ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll after
dropping two straight games as well.
The Penguins and Hilltoppers are set to clash on Saturday at
1 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium. |
