Women’s Golf: Penguins are Champs!
Formeck Takes Medalist Honors
Lexington, Ky. -- In what was a complete team effort
by the Penguins, the Youngstown State women's golf team is the 2009 Horizon
League Champions after winning the league title by 17 strokes on Sunday at
Kearney Hills Golf Course.
As a team, the Penguins carded a three-round total of 968
(331-319-318) to take the crown. The Penguins led after every round of the
tournament and the round of 318 was a tournament low.
Leading the way for the Penguins was freshman Samantha
Formeck, who took medalist honors following a three-round total of 239
(78-82-79).
Formeck follows up Katie Rogner's impressive freshman
performance from a year ago to make it back-to-back freshman medalist for the
Penguins at the league championship.
In addition, Formeck was named both Horizon League Player of
the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Formeck was also named to the All-Tournament
Team and the All-Horizon Team.
Junior Brittany Stillwagon finished in second place after
firing a 241 (84-79-78). Rogner was one stroke behind shooting a 242 (83-75-84)
to claim fifth place.
Both Stillwagon and Rogner joined Formeck on being named to
the All-Tournament Team and Rogner also earned All-Horizon League Team honors.
Junior Ann Ciavarella was the next finisher for the Penguins
as she shot a 249 (86-83-80) to finish in 12th. Senior Molle Boney rounded it
out for the Penguins, carding a 256 (90-85-81 to finish in 19th.
Head coach Roseann Schwartz was named the Horizon League
Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season for her work.
The Penguins overcame a second place finish from a year ago
to claim their second conference title. The Penguins won their first title in
2003 and have finished second three times.
Individually, this is the third time a Penguin has taken an
individual crown.
