Samantha Formeck Cards 71 to Qualify
for 2009 Women's Amateur Publinks
Greensburg, Pa. -- Youngstown State freshman
Samantha Formeck (Northern Cambria,
Pa.) continued her impressive 2009
campaign earning a spot in the
Women's Amateur Public Links
Championship. On Thursday, she shot
a one-under-par 71 to place first in a Publinks
qualifier at Totteridge Golf Club in
Greensburg, Pa. She won the event by
four strokes, making six birdies
throughout her round.
Formeck will take
part in the event which will be held
June 22-27 at Red Tail Golf Club in
Devens, Mass. The final qualifiers
for the Publinks will be held on
Friday.
Red Tail is named after the majestic Red Tail hawks that soar
serenely overhead, the 7000-plus
yard, par 72 course is crafted from
a site of great natural beauty. It
flows over rolling wooded hills and
meanders among numerous streams and
ponds.
The terrain
varies from classic New England
landscapes of maples, birches, oaks
and pines to tall grasses and sands
reminiscent of coastal courses. The
golf course architect, Brian Silva,
dedicated a high level of personal
involvement to the course and has
designed it to work with the site’s
beautiful features. The course
demonstrates spectacularly that
environmentally responsible
practices can be harmonious with
striking beauty and delightful
playability.
Golf Magazine
recently ranked Red Tail as one of
the top 50 courses in America.
Since the
final days of April, Formeck has
taken home medalist honors at the
2009 Horizon League Championships,
was named the Horizon League Golfer
and Newcomer of the Year, earned a
spot in a second-round qualifier for
the U.S. Women's Open, which is yet
to be played, and has now qualified
for the Publinks Championship.
She plays in a U.S. Women's Open final qualifier on Monday,
June 15, at Woodmont Country Club in
Rockville, Md.
Last year
Katie Rogner qualified for the U.S.
Women's Amateur while the last Penguin
to play in the Women's Publinks was
Stephanie Matasek in 2001. Matasek
finished 68th in the event, missing
the final cut by two spots. |
