YSU Continues Road Trip; Penguins to Play at UIC
    The Youngstown State men’s basketball team looks to bounce back from a disappointing Horizon League loss when the Penguins play at Illinois-Chicago on Monday night. Tipoff at the UIC Pavilion is set for 8:30 p.m. (Eastern Time.)
    Youngstown State (3-8 overall and 0-2 in the Horizon League) allowed a late advantage to slip away at Loyola losing 85-78 to the Ramblers on Saturday afternoon. The Penguins led 75-72 with just over three minutes remaining, but Loyola scored 13 of the games final 16 points to pull out the comeback win.
    Andy Jahnke came off the bench to score a career-best 19 points against the Ramblers and was one of four players to score in double figures. Adam Baumann had 14 and TeJay Anderson had an impressive outing with 12 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. But Loyola shot 55.1 percent compared to YSU’s 42.9 percent.
    Now, YSU remains in Chicago to play at Illinois-Chicago, the Horizon League preseason favorite. The Flames are also winless in Horizon League play at 0-2 while posting a 9-5 overall mark. UIC has lost three straight and is coming off a 56-48 home loss to Detroit this past Saturday.
    The Penguins have never beaten the Flames in nine previous meetings, including three losses last season. UIC beat Youngstown State 74-47 at the UIC Pavilion last year on the final day of the regular season.
    YSU concludes its three-game road trip on Thursday when the Penguins play at UW-Green Bay. Youngstown State returns home on Jan. 10 against Cleveland State.

Scouting the Flames
   
Illinois-Chicago has lost three straight, including two Horizon League contests, entering the game against YSU.
    UIC lost to Detroit this past Saturday 56-48 at the UIC Pavilion. The Flames were outscored 33-22 in the second half of the contest against the Titans. Armond Williams scored a game-high 19 points for UIC.
    Cedrick Banks leads the Flames averaging 17.7 points per game while Williams averages 13.4 points a game. As a team, Illinois-Chicago is shooting 45.3 percent.
    UIC is coached by Jimmy Collins (New Mexico State, 1970) who is 116-106 in his eighth season with the program.

Penguins vs. Illinois-Chicago Series
   
Youngstown State has never beaten Illinois-Chicago in nine previous meetings. The first meeting between the two schools was in 1993 in Chicago. In the four games played at the UIC Pavilion, the Penguins have never been within 15 points at the end of the contest. YSU has lost the four games by an average of 20 points.

YSU vs. Loyola Recap
   
Youngstown State could not hold on to two leads in the final five minutes as Loyola scored 13 of the contests final 16 points in an 85-78 Rambler victory on Saturday afternoon.
    YSU led 68-64 and 75-72, but could not hold down the lead. The contest was tied at 77 with 2:08 left, but Loyola scored eight of the final nine points to earn the win. The Ramblers went ahead for good on a layup by Demetrius Williams at the 1:45 mark of the game.
    Andy Jahnke scored a career-high 19 points in a losing effort as the Penguins had four players score in double figures. Paul McMillan scored a game-high 26 for the Ramblers. Adam Baumann scored 14 points while TeJay Anderson and Doug Underwood had 12 apiece.
    The contest featured 16 ties and 16 lead changes.
    For the game, Loyola shot 55.1 percent while the Penguins were 42.9 percent from the field. Loyola outrebounded YSU 37-30.

Penguins Drill 10 3-Pointers
    Against Loyola, the Penguins drilled 10 3-pointers, the second time this season they made 10-or-more in a game. YSU made 14 against Slippery Rock on Dec. 3.

Anderson Posts Near Triple-Double
   
Senior TeJay Anderson just missed posting the first triple-double in school history with his effort against Loyola. Anderson scored 12 points while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out a career-best nine assists. No one in Youngstown State history has ever had a triple-double.

Jahnke Tallies Career High
   
Sophomore guard Andy Jahnke came off the bench to score a career-best 19 points against Loyola on Saturday afternoon. In the game, Jahnke had career highs in field-goals made (six) and 3-pointers made (five). His previous career-best point effort was 15 at Niagara in the season opener.

Underwood Over 800 Points
   
Junior Doug Underwood has scored 830 points in his Youngstown State career following a 12-point effort against Loyola. For his career, he has scored in double figures on 47 occasions, including each of the past four games.

Penguins Look For Windy City WIN
   
Youngstown State has not won in Chicago since beating Chicago State 81-64 on Feb. 1, 2001. Since that time, YSU has lost seven straight losing to DePaul, Chicago State, Illinois-Chicago twice and Loyola three times, including an 85-78 defeat on Saturday.

YSU Goes For Road Victory
   
Entering their third season in the Horizon League, the Penguins will be looking for their first conference road win. YSU has not won a regular-season conference road game since joining the Horizon League.

Mends’ Numbers Are Up
   
In eight games this season, sophomore point guard Jonathan Mends has scored 41 points, dished out 30 assists, grabbed 18 rebounds and had 13 steals. Last season in 29 games, Mends had 40 points, 39 assists, 40 rebounds and 12 steals.

Up Next: YSU at UW-Green Bay
   
The Penguins conclude their three-game road trip on Thursday when they travel to UW-Green Bay. Last season, YSU won two of three games from the Phoenix, including a 65-61 victory in the Horizon League Tournament. UWGB plays at Wright State on Monday night before returning home.
