The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce the Mike and Janet Murray Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Janet is a graduate of YSU’s Beeghly College of Education where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She taught elementary education for several years before devoting her efforts to senior citizen programs. Mike also attended YSU for three years before finishing his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration while in California. He has completed numerous executive and leadership programs at Stanford, Rutgers and Michigan.
He served 37 years with a Fortune 300 domestic and international, business to business, electrical wholesaler with six hundred locations in seven countries. He spent the last 17 years of his career serving in three different corporate Vice President positions. He was responsible for over 8,000 employees along with their operations.
Mike and Janet lead an active retirement, travelling extensively to more than 50 countries, all seven continents, all 50 states, the North Pole and Antarctica. They are avid and active supporters of YSU and are frequently seen in the stands proudly cheering on the Penguins.
This scholarship endowment, which will be first awarded in the 2017-18 academic year, will go to a women’s basketball student-athlete.
“We are proud of the efforts and dedication of the YSU Women’s Basketball student-athletes and coaching staff,” the Murray’s said. “We wish to focus their support and this endowment will help on furthering those efforts.”
Head Women’s Basketball Coach John Barnes said the Murray’s endowment will have a big impact on the program.
“Mike and Janet are the epitome of YSU fans, and their support to the women's basketball program and all sports here at YSU is outstanding,” Barnes said. “The generous gift to women's basketball will not only help players currently in the program, but also players for generations to come. We are extremely fortunate to have them in our YSU family.”
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the Murray’s live life to the fullest and are excited to provide this endowment to the women’s basketball program.
“Janet and Mike are two great people,” McFadden said. “They have been all over the world and seen firsthand how important that educational opportunities are. Mike was a very successful business executive while Janet was an outstanding teacher and also made an impact on the lives of many senior citizens.”
