2006 Football Alumni Spring Reunion A Big Success

The 2006 Youngstown State Football Alumni Golf Outing and Spring Reunion Weekend was a tremendous success for the organization. The group spent two days rekindling passion for the program, which by all indications is ready for a breakout year this fall.
The weekend began on Thursday night with the annual Spaghetti Dinner. Coach Jon Heacock, his assistant coaches and select senior student-athletes participated in the event held at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.
On Friday, the group headed out to gorgeous Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex, Pa., for a luncheon, cookout and special golf outing.
The luncheon was sponsored by Pizza Joe’s, but the food highlight of the course was provided by linebackers coach Jerry Olsavsky and new defensive line coach Antoine Smith. Both stepped up big time at the grill handling the feeding frenzy with sizzling hot dogs for everyone.
On the course, the foursome of Bob Ferranti (1969-72), Dennis Klembara (1968-71), Gary Klembara and Bernie Bartoszek (1969-71) won the event. Gary Klembara was a key asset to the team making the longest putt on No. 8 and drilling the longest drive on No. 10.
Other skill prize winners included Rob Robes (1993-94) longest drive on No. 6, Dan Morgan (1966) closest to the pin on No. 14 and Joe Lutsi (1964-67) had the longest putt on No. 18. No one came away with the Hole-In-One prize on No. 9, a car provided by Columbiana-Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac.
Raffles were held for a set of irons, a golf bag, a DVD/VCR player and a copier-fax-print-scanner combination machine.
Following the outing, the group headed down to Stambaugh Stadium for a dinner in the DeBartolo Stadium Club. For the third consecutive year, the Outback Steakhouse provided an incredible meal and everyone left no scrapes behind.
The annual Red-White Spring Game proved to be entertaining. Redshirt freshman quarterback Todd Rowan threw four touchdown passes and the Red Team scored 24 straight points en route to a 31-13 victory.
Rowan, a native of nearby Braceville, Ohio, threw scoring strikes of five, 25, 45 and 74 yards, and the Red Team intercepted a pass, blocked an extra point and returned a blocked punt for a score.
Rowan went 10-for-10 for 137 yards and three touchdowns for the White squad, and he was a perfect 2-for-2 for 78 yards and a touchdown after taking over for the Red Team midway through the second half. Junior quarterback Tom Zetts completed three-of-nine passes for 63 yards and was picked off once.
The White squad held the edge in rushing 93 to 65 thanks to Jabari Scott's 60 yards on two carries. Justin Reams had 40 yards on 11 carries for the Red Team.
Jeremiah Wright had a game-high six tackles for the Red Squad, and Marty Hutchinson had five tackles and two sacks for the White Team.
