Penguins Net 3-1 Win over Cleveland State
Mentor, Ohio -- Youngstown
State (1-14-1, 1-6 Horizon)
sophomore Maddie Lawther netted one
goal and added two assists to lift
the Penguins over Cleveland State
3-1
on a cold Sunday afternoon at Mentor
High School.
The Penguins got on the scoreboard first in the 16th minute
when sophomore Katie Duracky
connected on a cross from Lawther.
The goal was Duracky's third of the
season. The Penguin defense
held CSU for the remainder of the
half to take a 1-0 lead heading into
the locker room.
In the 53rd minute Cleveland State knotted the score at 1-1
when Amber Rasmussen scored on the
right side of the box from 15 yards
out, however less than 20 seconds
later Lawther scored her first goal
of the season off a pass from Katie
Deprey to give the Penguins a 2-1
lead. Freshman Tessa Brookman
helped the Penguins pull away with
the lead when she scored her first
career goal off a cross from Lawther
in the 73rd minute.
The win was the first for Head Coach Anthony James and the
first for the Penguins since Oct.
30, 2003.
The Penguins edged the Vikings on shots 21-19, but CSU
outcornered YSU 4-2. Junior
Caitlin Bestard recorded 13 saves
for YSU.
YSU concludes their regular season on Friday, Oct. 22 when
they host Villanova at 7 p.m. at
Stambaugh Stadium. |
