Soccer: Penguins Lose Classic Opener By One to Manhattan
Youngstown - A defensive battle, came down to one shot
as the Youngstown State soccer team
suffered their fifth loss -- and
second straight 1-0 defeat -- during
Friday night's game against
Manhattan at Stambaugh Stadium in
the opening round of the Penguin
Classic.
Both teams played
strong defensively in the first half
as neither could muster a goal.
However, the Jaspers (3-2) finally
broke through with a second-half
goal that was enough to beat YSU,
1-0.
Youngstown State (0-5) came out very evenly matched with the
Jaspers only allowing two shots on
the goal in the first half.
Midfielder Sadie Brookman had an
impressive offensive effort
producing three shots on goal in
hopes of putting some goals on the
board for the Penguins.
Manhattan's scoring attempts were continually stopped
throughout the first half and it was
not until the 64:45 mark that
Chrissy Reina put the only tally of
the night on the board with an
assist from Caitlin Newkirk.
YSU goalkeeper Jessica Yarter had three saves while
Manhattan's Kiera Fox had three to
record a shutout.
In other Penguin Classic action on Friday, Binghamton scored
three second-half goals to beat VMI,
3-0.
The tournament concludes on Sunday when Binghamton and
Manhattan square off for the
championship at 11 a.m. while VMI
and Youngstown State play the
consolation match at 1 p.m. |
