Penguins Defeat Golden Griffins 1-0 on Gapczynski's Goal

 Youngstown State (1-2) out scored Canisius (1-2) 1-0 with a goal by freshman Jordan Gapczynski on Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium.    
  The Griffins offense came out strong totaling 11 shots in the first half. Midfielder Sylvia Kowalski had a total of five shots including three on goal. The ‘Guins fired back with a pass by Keeley Rice to Gapczynski at 33:33 into the game for the score.
   YSU’s offense remained strong in the second half. Freshmen Natalie Brady and Kate Bonn took shots on goal for the Penguins. Rice and Jenna Fink each had a shot for the Penguins as well.
    Despite Canisius’ 10 shots in the second half, The Griffins could not connect with the net sealing the Penguins the first win of the season.  
    Canisius had the upper hand in shots as they outnumbered the Penguins 21 to 8. Canisius also outnumbered YSU in corner kicks 5-1.

    Gaolkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney finished the game with 11 saves.
     Head Coach Anthony James was pleased to start the month off with a win.
   "The team played this match with a new game plan that we had put together earlier in the week," James said. "We came so close in the last two games; it was nice to see it all come together tonight."
  YSU will be back in action for a five game road tilt beginning this Sunday against St. Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m.
