Soccer: Penguins Drop Season Opener to
Robert Morris, 3-1
Moon Township,
Pa.
-- Junior Brittny Humphrey
scored for the Penguins and Sade
Tate took two shots against Robert
Morris, but the Penguins could not
stop the Colonials offensive efforts
in the 3-1 loss in the season opener
for both teams on Friday afternoon.
The Colonials (1-0) opened the scoring at 6:52 into the game
with a goal from sophomore Jessica
Weary. YSU freshman goalkeeper
Caitlin Bodzioney helped keep the
score at 1-0 for the first half.
The Youngtown State's offense was ignited in the second half,
but the Penguins three scoring
attempts came up short. Both Tate
and Humphrey's shots on goal bounced
off the post.
In the 60th minute of play, Tate hit the cross bar for
the second time. Humphrey made an
attempt on the rebound, but Robert
Morris goalie Jessica Onufer came up
with the save.
The Colonials then took control with a goal from freshman
Daneen Stevenato putting Robert
Morris up 2-0 at 61:42.
Humphrey fired back just nine minutes later to connect with
the net on the assist from freshman
Kate Bonn.
Humphrey's goal cut the score to 2-1 until 77:14 when senior
Christina Pilato put
the contest away with a shot high
past Bodzioney.
The Penguins (0-1) led 15-14 in shots while Bodzioney finished with
four saves.
Head Coach Anthony James said YSU had its chances to win the
opener.
"It
was very unfortunate that we lost
the game based on the chances we
had," James said. "We created more
goal-scoring opportunities than they
did, but the difference obviously
was they scored all of theirs and we
only scored one of ours."
YSU
will play the season home opener at
1 p.m. on Sunday against Northern
Michigan.
