Valiant Effort Not Enough in 1-0 Overtime Loss to Panthers
Youngstown -- The
Youngstown State soccer team (2-9
overall and
0-2 Horizon League) lost an evenly-fought 1-0 battle to UW-Milwaukee (10-2-1, 3-0)
in a game that remained scoreless until the 99th minute of play.
The Penguins defense played head on with the Panthers to keep
the first half scoreless. Goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney made the first save of
the game at 2:47 off the shot from Jodi Klagos. UW-Milwaukee midfielder Sarah
Teegarden also had a shot in the first half that was stopped by Bodzioney.
YSU'S offense had two scoring attempts in the second
half but could not connect wit the net. Jodi Bowlen attempted shot that was wide of
the net at 59:37 of play. Brittny Humphrey fired back 20 minutes later
with another shot that was wide.
Regulation
ended in a scoreless tie as the team's
prepared for overtime.
UW-Milwaukee's Carly Chertos made a
quick scoring attempt at 97:59 into
the third period that
was saved by Bodzioney. Pam Shipway
had a shot on goal just seconds
later that was also stopped.
It was finally Taylor Powell's unassisted goal in the the
final minute of overtime that
sealed the win for UW-Milwaukee.
Bodziney
finished with a total of eight
saves.
Head Coach Anthony James was
disappointed with the close loss but
pleased with how YSU played overall.
"The team put forth a tremendous effort," James said.
"UW-Milwaukee is a strong Horizon
League opponent that we have never
taken into overtime before. I'm
extremely pleased at how close the
team kept the game."
The Penguins
will be back in action next Friday
as they take on Detroit in the final
home game of the season at Stambaugh
Stadium.
