McDonnell Blasts Two Bombs But Guins
Drop Two to Robert Morris Moon
Township, Pa. -- Junior Kristen
McDonnell tied a single-game school
record with two home runs in game
two of a doubleheader and moved into
second place on the YSU all-time
home runs list with 19 but the
Youngstown State softball team
dropped a pair of games to Robert
Morris, 3-1, and 9-6, on Thursday
afternoon.
McDonnell became the second player
in three days to tie the single-game
home run record after Rochelle Vanyi
blasted two round-trippers against
Cleveland State on Tuesday.
Trailing 5-0 in the top of the
second inning, McDonnell belted a
two-run bomb to bring the Guins with
three, 5-2.
After the Colonials cushioned their
lead to 9-3 after four innings,
McDonnell, who drove in five runs,
drilled a three-run home run in the
top of the sixth inning to slice to
deficit to three, 9-6, but the Guins
would not get any closer.
In the opener, senior Becky Hibner
tossed another complete-game
performance but was the hard-luck
loser for the second straight
outing. Hibner gave up just seven
hits and three runs in the loss.
Freshman Rochelle Vanyi led off the
game with her ninth home run of the
season but the Guins could only
muster just one more hit the rest of
the game - a single by Jamie Fornal
in the top of the seventh inning.
YSU hosts Butler in a three-game
series starting Saturday, April 19,
at McCune Park. First pitch is set
