Softball Seeks to Extend Win Streak, Hosts League Leader UIC

The Youngstown State softball team (5-15, 2-3 Horizon League) looks to extend its overall winning streak to four and its Horizon League streak to three when it hosts league leader UIC (13-21, 4-1 Horizon League) in a three-game series this weekend at McCune Park in Canfield, Ohio.

First pitch on both days is slated for 1 p.m.

Last Time Out

The Penguins are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Detroit, 3-2, and 2-1, on April 3. Senior McKenzie Bedra and freshman Rochelle Vanyi each hit their fifth home run of the season to lead the Penguins.

In the opener, Bedra blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to give the Guins a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore hurler Cheryl Cale picked up her second straight decision scattering 10 hits and striking out four.

In the nightcap, Danielle Chase allowed just eight hits and one unearned in a complete-game victory.

Vanyi belted a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to the Guins their only runs of the game.

A Bair Market

Sophomore Kristin Bair has been a welcomed addition to the Penguins lineup. The Louisville, Ohio, native leads the Penguins and ranks second in the Horizon League with a .441 batting average.

Bedra, Vanyi Among Leaders

Senior McKenzie Bedra and freshman Rochelle Vanyi rank among the top home run hitters in the Horizon League. The duo is ranked tied for third in the circuit with five home runs each.

Cale Hurlin' Tough

Sophomore Cheryl Cale picked up two straight victories this week for the Penguins. In her last two decisions, Cale owns a record of 2-0 with a 3.77 earned-run average and two complete games. The back-to-back victories is also a first for Cale.
