The Youngstown State baseball team will have home games against teams from the Big 12 and the Big East as well as serve as the host for the 2013 Horizon League Tournament during the upcoming season, YSU first-year head coach Steve Gillispie announced.
The Penguins will open their first season under Gillispie at Samford on Feb. 15 and are scheduled to play their first 23 games on the road. YSU’s home opener is set for March 22 against Chicago State, and its Horizon League opener is March 15. The Penguins will host the Horizon League Tournament for the third time in school history May 22-25 at Eastwood Field.
The home schedule features home games against Pittsburgh (April 9) and West Virginia (April 24), as well as Northeast Ohio rivals Akron (April 3) and Kent State (May 1). YSU will also team up for the third straight year with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for a School Day game at 11 a.m. on May 3. Of YSU’s 19 regular-season home games, 16 will come in a 33-day span from April 3 to May 5. Of note, the primary schedule for weekend series will be slightly different in 2013. Sunday games will start at 1 p.m. instead of noon.
YSU is slated to play eight games over six dates in February, starting with a four-game series against Samford to open the season. The Penguins will then play two games each against West Virginia and Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Feb. 22-24.
The Penguins will head back to North Carolina the following weekend for a four-game series at Charlotte on March 1-3, and they’ll play at two games Morehead State on March 5-6. Most YSU fans will have their first chance to see the Penguins play on March 8-10 when the Red and White will play two games each against Manhattan and Pittsburgh on Pitt’s campus. YSU will then play at Coppin State on March 12 before opening Horizon League play at UIC on March 15-17. YSU’s 23rd straight road game to start the season will be at Ohio on March 19. YSU opens its home schedule against Chicago State at Eastwood Field on March 22-24, but it will head back on the road for a game at Akron (March 26) and three conference tilts at Wright State (March 28-30).
YSU begins April with a home game against Akron (April 3), and that will start a stretch where the Penguins play 16 of their next 20 contests at Eastwood Field. YSU will have home conference series against Milwaukee (April 5-7), Valparaiso (April 12-14), UIC (April 19-21) and Wright State (May 3-5) during that span. In addition to the Akron game on April 3, YSU will host non-conference games against Pittsburgh on April 9, West Virginia on April 24 and Kent State on May 1. YSU’s only four road games in April are at West Virginia (April 10), at Pittsburgh (April 16), at Toledo (April 17) and at Kent State (April 23).
YSU concludes its regular season with conference series at Milwaukee (May 10-12) and at Valparaiso (May 16-18). The opening game of the Horizon League Tournament will be May 22, and the championship game will be May 25.
