With the winter-like weather finally appearing to be in the rearview mirror, the Youngstown State baseball team hopes a more consistent schedule will lead to quality innings on a more consistent basis. The Penguins will play two games this week against teams from BCS conferences before their first Horizon League road series of the season.

Youngstown State will play at Penn State's Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and it will host Pittsburgh at Eastwood Field on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. YSU will play three games at UIC's new Curtis Granderson Stadium on Friday at 5:05 p.m., Saturday at 3:05 p.m. and Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Various means of live coverage for the week's games are available through YSUsports.com.

Last Week: The Penguins went 1-2 last week with an 11-4 victory over Ohio and two losses to Wright State by scores of 4-2 and 5-1. The two contests against the Raiders opened YSU's Horizon League slate after the previous two conference weekends were cancelled due to poor weather. Junior outfielder Jason Shirley went 5-for-10 with four runs scored and three RBIs last week, and three of those hits came in the win over Ohio. YSU got solid pitching throughout the week as eight pitchers combined for a 4.00 ERA. Robert Switka threw five innings of scoreless relief in Saturday's loss to Wright State, and Josh North and Jared Wight both had scoreless weeks.

Probable Pitchers: Junior right-hander Anthony Konders (0-0, 4.32 ERA) will make his first start as a Penguin against the Nittany Lions on Tuesday, and fellow junior righty Ryan Krokos (0-2, 15.12 ERA) is scheduled to start against Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Senior right-hander Patrick O'Brien (1-3, 5.16 ERA) is the game one starter versus UIC, and he'll be followed by junior righty Brendon Shoemake (0-3, 6.55 ERA). Sunday's YSU starter has not been determined yet.
