The Youngstown State baseball team will play its two nearest rivals this week before playing its final Horizon League road series of the season. The Penguins will host Akron at Eastwood Field on Tuesday at 1 p.m., and they'll play at Kent State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. A three-game series at Wright State will begin on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Penguins are coming off a 5-2 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday in the series finale against the Panthers. Youngstown State scored in five different innings and got a valiant effort from its pitching staff to hand Milwaukee just its second home loss in the last 26 games. Ryan Krokos allowed one run in 3.2 innings in an emergency start, and Alex Frey, Robert Switka and Josh North did not allow a hit or issue a walk over the final five innings. The Penguins had dropped their previous four games of the week, which included a walk-off 7-6 loss to Canisius on Wednesday and a two-run loss at Milwaukee on Saturday.
Freshman Alex Larivee continues to lead the Penguins at the plate with a .320 batting average and a .388 on-base percentage. Brent Gillespie hit his first two home runs of the season last week and leads the club with 11 doubles. Phil Lipari has scored a team-best 21 runs, and Mike Accardi's six steals are a team high.
Sophomore left-hander Jared Wight will start on Tuesday against Akron, and freshman righty Jeremy Quinlan is the planned starter for Wednesday against Kent State. YSU's weekend rotation has not been announced.
Scouting Akron: Akron will come to Eastwood Field with an even record of 21-21, and the Zips have already won more games than they have in any of the past three seasons. Akron has lost its last four games since shutting out YSU on April 22. Outfielder Devan Ahart leads the Zips with a .319 batting average and 22 stolen bases, and he's tied for the team lead in home runs and runs scored.
Scouting Kent State: Kent State enters this week with a 28-15 overall mark and a 12-6 record in MAC play. The Golden Flashes had won five straight games before dropping back-to-back contests against Bowling Green over the weekend. Zarley Zalewski leads Kent State with a .379 batting average, and four of his teammates are batting at least .300. Kent State plays at Penn State on Tuesday before hosting YSU on Wednesday. The Penguins are 1-2 against the Golden Flashes so far this season.
Scouting Wright State: Wright State is 25-16 overall and has a commanding lead in the Horizon League standings with an 18-2 record in conference play. The Raiders enter this week on a 10-game winning streak and haven't lost since April 9. Wright State leads the Horizon League in ERA and opposing batting average while ranking third in batting average and slugging percentage. Michael Timm leads the Raiders with a .338 batting average, and he's one of seven regular starters who bats at least .277. Wright State swept YSU in an abbreviated two-game series at the end of March.
