The Youngstown State football team used the morning practice session to have the offensive and defensive units go full bore against each other. In the evening, YSU spent an hour in helmets going over plays from earlier in the day and working on individual drills.
The Penguins stretched and went right into a full team workout in the morning.
Quarterback Kurt Hess played one series and promptly led the offense down the field 65 yards in five plays for a touchdown. The last 52 yards came on runs by Jordan Thompson, who capped the drive with a two-yard jaunt. Hess completed one pass on the drive, a 14-yarder to Andre Stubbs.
Angle, who bounced back from an early interception, led an impresive 15-play drive that Torrian Pace capped with a two-yard scoring run. Kanetsky moved the offense deep into defense territory before Demond Hymes was stopped on a fourth-and-short.
The offense scored in two of four red-zone situations. Pace ran one in from nine yards out while Nania connected with Andrew Williams on a 20-yard score.
The final sequence of the early practice was a two-minute drill which was led by Angle. Moving from their own 35, the offense reached the defense's 10-yard line with under 10 seconds remaining. With five seconds left, Angle's pass to Kevin Watts was broken up by Josh Garner. On the final snap with one-second left, Angle's toss to the back corner of the end zone was just out of Christian Bryan's reach as the defense held on.
In the evening, YSU spent a hour in helmets working on various situations from the morning's practice.
The Penguins have one practice on Thursday, which starts at 10 a.m.
YSU opens the season on Friday, Sept. 2 at Michigan State. The contest will be televised on the Big Ten Network and carried on 570 WKBN AM.
