Hess Highlights Three Academic All-MVFC Selections

Youngstown State senior quarterback Kurt Hess was named first-team Academic All-Missouri Valley Football Conference, the league announced on Wednesday. Dom Rich and Steve Zaborsky received honorable-mention all-league honors.

It was the third time in Hess's distinguished career that he was named to the first-team all-academic squad. He is just the sixth the Penguin to be a three-time academic all-conference pick and joins Tom Zetts as the only three-time first-team honoree.

Hess was a second-team all-conference pick earlier this week. As a senior, he completed 164-of-265 passes for 2,229 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Rich, a fifth-year senior, played in seven contest this past season and started four times. Zaborsky, a third-year sophomore, started eight times during the year and was a first-team academic all-district pick.

Completed 164-of-265 passes for 2,229 yards and 22 touchdowns in 12 games…averaged 185.8 yards per game with a completion percentage of 61.9…in MVFC play was 113-of-175 for 1,461 yards and 16 touchdowns…averaged 182.6 yards per contest…had a rating of 160.30 in league games…had six 200-yard plus passing games, including a career-high 311 vs. Illinois State…threw four touchdown passes against Southern Illinois and Illinois State…three-time MVFC Offensive Player of the Week…rushed for 106 yards on 53 carries and had four touchdowns…all four TDs were in league play…set numerous school records during his four-year career…team captain.

Played in seven games and started four times…battled injuries during the later portion of the season…finished with 25 total tackles, including 12 solo stops…had 12 tackles in league play…had seven tackles against NDSU, three at SIU and two vs. South Dakota State…team captain.
