Men's Basketball Hosts Green Bay on New Year’s Eve

Game Preview 

• The Youngstown State men's basketball team goes for its second straight Horizon League win when it hosts Green Bay, Saturday, Dec. 31.

• Tipoff is at 1 p.m. at the Beeghly Center and the game will be broadcast 570-AM WKBN, ESPN3 and the WatchESPN App.

• The Penguins are also looking to start league play with a 2-0 record for the first time since joining the Horizon League in 2001-02.

• The Penguins play their first Horizon League road game when they visit Northern Kentucky, Thursday, Jan. 5, at 7:30 p.m.

 

Last Time Out

• The Penguins had four players scoring in double figures and defeated Milwaukee, 88-87, in double overtime on Dec. 29.

• Junior Cameron Morse, who hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, scored 33 points and junior Francisco Santiago had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

• Senior Brett Frantz and Jorden Kaufman each had 10 points and freshman Braun Hartfield had a career-high 11 rebounds.

 

Morse Among National Leaders

• With his 33-point effort against Milwaukee, junior Cameron Morse now ranks sixth nationally with 23 points per game.

• Prior to the contest, Morse was 14th in the country.

• He also ranks second in the Horizon League in scoring.

 

New Year's Eve Games

• This will be just the sixth time Youngstown State has played on New Year's Eve.

• The Penguins own a record of 2-3 in games played on Dec. 31.

• The last time YSU played on New Year's Eve the Penguins came away with a 78-74 win over Northern Kentucky in 2014.

• This is the fifth time since 2002 that the Penguins have played on Dec. 31.

• The only other time was in 1947 - a 76-49 loss to Muskingum.

 

Hartfield Nets Highs

• Freshman Braun Hartfield made a big impact off the bench in the Penguins' 88-87 double-overtime win over Milwaukee.

• Hartfield had eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the victory.

• He also had two assists and a career-high three blocks.

• Over the last four games, Hartfield is averaging 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

 

About Green Bay

• Green Bay enters the game with 7-6 overall mark and 1-0 record in the Horizon League after knocking off Cleveland State, 76-75, in overtime.

• The Phoenix have won three straight and two of the last three games have gone into overtime.

• Leading Green Bay is Charles Cooper with 12.8 points per game.

• This is the 41st meeting between Youngstown State and Green Bay in a series that dates back to 1993.

• The Phoenix own a 31-9 advantage in the all-time series and won the last meeting, 107-90, in Green Bay.
